Interlinings: What Are They Used For?

Currently, to maintain the shape of the various sections of a garment, a fabric is used that is permanently secured between two layers of fabric in a garment through fusing or sewing; this is known as interfacing. It provides insulation and weight, as well as improving the drape of the fabric, which helps protect delicate fabrics.

Types of Interlinings

There are two types of interfacing, each with unique characteristics that meet different sewing needs:

Sewn-in interfacing

This type of interfacing has a plain weave construction. It is placed between two pieces of fabric and secured with stitches. It is important to note that, before joining the fabrics, you must ensure that the interfacing is the same size as the other pieces of fabric to be joined.
In terms of construction, for lighter interfacings, cotton warp and weft threads can be used, which provide a soft feel on both sides; whereas to prevent the garment from wrinkling and to ensure better shape retention, a cotton warp and a viscose weft are typically used.

Heat-activated interfacing

This type of interlining is made from woven fibers or nonwoven materials, which are bonded together through thermal or chemical processes. It is placed between the layers of fabric and bonded by fusion, which requires the application of pressure and heat for a specific period of time.

The fibers used can be polyester, rayon, or nylon; furthermore, the way the fibers are arranged affects the strength and characteristics of the interfacing.

Functions of Interlining

  • To hold a garment in place.
  • To help the garment retain its shape.
  • It reinforces parts of the garment, making it stronger and more attractive.
  • It improves the garment’s performance during use.

Applications and Uses of Interlinings in Clothing

They are mainly used on collars, cuffs, jackets, as trims on outerwear, coats, shoes, bags, and other items; however, they can also be used to protect fabrics, especially those exposed to direct sunlight, such as curtains.

How do you choose a type of interfacing?

The type of interfacing should be chosen based on the fabric to be used; if you’re working with a heavy fabric such as denim or wool, consider using an interfacing with a cotton warp and a viscose weft; however, if you’re using a lightweight fabric such as silk, use a lightweight interfacing. Polyester Fabric

What are TC and CVC fabrics?​

The 65% polyester blend (TC fabric) is one of the most popular fabrics today, as it combines the high strength and durability of polyester with the softness, smooth surface, and good elasticity of cotton.
